Industry City - Front View

Industry City

“I was thrilled to have produced a design for a 40m building – my tallest so far. The design was inspired by the architecture of the building, particularly the repetition of the windows. The site is bathed in the most beautiful colours at sunset, which has inspired my palette for the project.” – Camille Walala, artist

In 2018, WantedDesign invited Camille Walala to bring colour and character to the façade of a seven-storey historic building in Industry City – a 35-acre innovation and manufacturing hub on the Brooklyn waterfront. Housing design studios and a key venue for the NYCxDESIGN festival, the 40m building was the studio’s tallest structure to date.

To create the mural, Camille developed an L-shaped 3D-effect motif around the windows that accentuated the architectural features of the building. The colour palette of pale pink, cobalt, yellow and red was developed in response to the colours that bathe the site at sunset.

Working with a team of decorative painters from Industry City’s landmark-building specialists EverGreene Architectural Arts, the studio spent 12 days transforming the building exterior before the grand unveiling. The result is a head-turning large-scale mural that brings a joyful intervention into the streetscape with its bold colours and dynamic lines.
